Webster Groves basking in ‘green’ energy

The sun may not be shining much these days, but you don’t need to see the sun to harness its power. Since the Webster Groves EPA Green Power Challenge kicked off in October 2013, many businesses and residents have signed on to help Webster Groves reach its challenge goal, to match three percent of the City’s electricity use with green energy.  Microgrid Solar is working on several projects for buildings at Webster University and a project with Lighting Associates, Inc., 3216 S Brentwood Blvd.

The Green Power Team also would like to thank Freddie’s Market, 9052 Big Bend Blvd., for stepping up and committing to the challenge in a big way. Not only have Freddie’s owners made the commitment to install a 25-kilowatt solar array (panels) with Webster Groves-based Brightergy Solar, but Freddie’s also has become an Ameren Missouri Pure Power Gold leader by matching 20 percent of its electrical usage with energy from a Missouri wind farm. This commitment will save the environment 93,328 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of taking 8.8 cars off the road for a year.

Webster Groves residents are doing their part. Microgrid Solar is working with several homeowners to install solar, and the Ameren Missouri Pure Power team has been going door-to-door to spread the green power word. Since the challenge began, nearly 80 homes have enrolled in the Pure Power program, which is equivalent to the avoided emissions of 108,883 pounds of carbon dioxide or taking 10.3 cars off the road for a year.

Thanks to community support, Webster Groves is more than halfway toward its goal. Keep up the good work!
